In India, it is called a sacred plant and is used in sun-worshipping ceremonies. It has two varieties in which one blooms white flowers and the other blooms pinkish-white flowers.

It is a large shrub growing to 4 m tall. It has clusters of waxy flowers that are either white or lavender in colour. Each flower consists of five pointed petals and a small “crown” rising from the centre which holds the stamens. The plant has oval, light green leaves and milky stem.

Leaves are simple, opposite, sub sessile, ovate and chordate .Flowers consists of pointed five petals and a small beautiful crown, which holds the stamen. It has milky stem and contains cardiac glycosides, fatty acid and calcium. There is no need to plant this plant; it is a nature’s gift which occurs on sandy land during summer. It dries up during rainy days.

There are two species of this Ayurvedic plant, one of which has Calotropis Procera (purple-flowered) which is used to overcome various types of health problems and the other Calotropis gigantea(white-flowered) which are very rare.

People use the bark and root bark for medicine. Despite serious safety concerns, calotropis is used for digestive disorders including diarrhoea, constipation and stomach ulcers; for painful conditions including toothache, cramps, and joint pain; and for parasitic infections including elephantiasis and worms.
