Indian sarsaparilla or the Anantmool is a species of plant that is slender, laticiferous, twining, sometimes prostrate or semi-erect shrub. Roots are woody and aromatic. The stem is numerous, slender, terete, thickened at the nodes. The leaves are opposite, short-petiole, very variable, elliptic-oblong to linear – lanceolate. The flowers are greenish outside, purplish inside, crowded in sub-sessile axillary cyme. It occurs over the greater part of India, from the upper Gangetic plain eastwards to Assam and in some places in central, western and South India.
The leaves are opposite each other and dark green in colour. They are elliptical-oblong to linear-lanceolate in shape. The flowers are greenish in colour towards the outside and purplish to yellow-orange on the inside. Flowers have five petals and flowering occurs between October and January.
Anantmool’s is a balancing qualities work holistically on the body and mind, and therefore it is traditionally also used to cleanse the mind of negative emotions such as anger and irritability.
